CHAPTER SIX

WHY HADN’T KYLE kissed her? Baylie was still asking herself that question the next afternoon as she skied down Make It or Break It slope. She wasn’t sure that she liked the turn of events. Days before Kyle had seemed to be kissing or trying to kiss her anytime they’d been alone. Then last night he’d kept her at arm’s length.

That wasn’t exactly accurate. He’d held her hand through a particularly icy area on their way to her place. They’d had a short but agreeable meal and he’d waited until she’d locked up and had then walked her home. She’d be lying if she said she hadn’t enjoyed having her hand in his as they’d walked. Kyle reminded her of one of those ancient oaks on the coast of Georgia that was strong enough to have survived horrible storms. He exuded confidence and security, stability. With him she felt safe, cared for. It was something she desperately needed to feel.

Days ago it wouldn’t have mattered what he thought of her, but somehow it mattered greatly now. What would he think when he learned the truth? She couldn’t take the chance that she might see a look of disappointment in his expressive eyes. No, that secret was best kept. She didn’t want to disappoint him like she had Ben. She’d had enough heartache.

Maybe she was making more out of Kyle being friendly than there was. He’d been on the snow-skiing circuit. He probably expected to have a different girl in every resort, and she was nobody’s groupie.

“Baylie, we have an issue near Runway Lift,” came a voice over the radio.

“What kind?” she asked.

“Guy down. Uh, what?” he said, as if speaking to someone else. “One of the patrol guys...” There was another pause. “Kyle says possible heart attack.”

“I’ll be right there. Call the top and have them send the snowmobile and put oxygen on it.”

Baylie’s throat constricted with fear as she sped down the slope, across another and into a glade that she didn’t have time to enjoy. She was needed now. Thankfully Kyle was there. At least he would have started CPR if it was necessary. How quickly she’d come to rely on him.

She pulled to a stop, released her bindings and headed toward where Kyle was on his knees, performing CPR. She dropped down across from Kyle. He’d already pulled off his knit cap and sweat beaded on his brow.

“I’ll handle the breathing. You stay on compressions. One, two, three, four, five.” She leaned over and put her mouth over the man’s.

His chest hardly rose. She wasn’t strong enough or large enough to give the overweight man the air he needed. That old, ugly monster called panic attacked.

Keep it together.

“Breathe, Baylie,” Kyle said from above her. She took a deep breath and put her mouth over the man’s mouth again. This time his chest rose a little higher. But not enough.

She looked at Kyle. His gaze bored into hers. Worry for the patient was etched across his face.
